Saturday's Picks

May 28, 2005

Home Team in CAPS

Anthony's Picks
  • Phoenix +4.5 over SAN ANTONIO

Phoenix, aided by the return of Joe Johnson and the relief of pressure from playing at home, will steal a game in San Antonio tonight.

Paul's Picks

  • SAN ANTONIO -4.5 over Phoenix

I'm a little surprised everyone, including Anthony, is jumping on the Phoenix bandwagon tonight. The fact that heads are taking Phoenix at an almost 2 to 1 rate has me feeling pretty good about this pick, especially considering Vegas has A LOT of money riding on this game. Joe Johnson is back and that's no doubt crucial for Phoenix, but how effective is he going to be? He hasn't played in 2 weeks and hasn't seen a defense like San Antonio's in over a month. And an injury like an orbital fracture can't be easy on the mental psyche heading into a huge game. Phoenix will be hungry tonight, I don't doubt that. But it's hard to trust an inexperienced team on the road in a desperate situation. Popovich knows this game is huge for the Spurs-- with a win, they can all but start booking hotels for the Finals next week. With a loss, the series suddenly becomes a little interesting. Expect the Spurs to come out and set the tone from the start with their defense. Popovich will be very aggressive in trying to take the Suns out of a rhythm from the get-go. I think Phoenix will give it a good run in the second half, but the Spurs will cover with relative ease thanks to big games from Tony Parker and Brent Barry out of the backcourt. SPURS 107, SUNS 99
