Report: Payton to Miami

This will be GP's 5th team since Oregon State

The Associated Press is reporting that Gary Payton's agent, Aaron Goodwin, is in Miami to finalize a contract for his client. The one-year deal should give GP his best shot at a title since his Sonics team made a failed run at the Bulls in '96. The financial aspects of the agreement were not announced but it's believed that the Heat can give him as much as the full $5 million mid-level, or as little as the veteran minimum, $1.1 million. Payton should challenge recently acquired Jason Williams for starting point guard duties now that Damon Jones has elected to play in Cleveland. Add this to the forefront of Paul's Training Camp Battles. More news will be released as it comes to us.

**UPDATE: 3:30 PM**

According to CNNSI.com, the Heat will sign the 15-year veteran to a one-year, minimum $1.1 million contract and avoid using any of its $5 million midlevel exception. That leaves Miami in position to add a player during the regular season who might be released. The team believes they will likely bring in another wing player before training camp begins, with former first-round pick Rodney White an option.

Who would win in a fistfight between GP and Jason Williams?

Ken,
Do you really think GP would let the words "White Boy" crack him in the face?

Hot damn! Miami is stacked now. Sort of like the Mavs a couple years ago, except their stack includes a man who is arguably the most dominant force in the game. I don't see how they can not win the NBA title unless they have a serious injury (or two).

As old as he is, I'd rather have GP then JWilliams any day of the week. He's terrible. I don't care what he's stats read. I wouldn't have him on my team in a million years. Same goes with Antoine Walker. Remember, the Heat will have to take the title away from the Spurs and the Spurs are better now then they were a few months ago when they won it all.

I agree 100% DS. San Antone is absolutely stacked with the additions of Finley and Oberto. I stringly believe Miami won't even make it out of the East. Gary Payton slows down everything, which could be good for Shaq, but bad for everyone else.

I strongly believe it too

How do they expect GP to be able to hang with Chauncey or Rip?

I think Jason Williams might have the edge brawl-wise over Gary just because he brings the crazy.

Now I'm pissed cause I hate payton, and he plays for my fav team. he's just proven to be an hassole (sorry about that) over the last couple seasons.
How can you go to a team like the lakers in order to win a ring, then play like shit and still have the nerves to go to phil jackson and complain about how he doesn't want to play triangle offense. I mean if you really want to win you put your ego on the side for a minute and do what you're told.

Anyway, i'm pretty sure he's gonna cause problems when he starts on the bench this season.
I don't know how van gundy will handle him and 'toine coming from the bench all season. It seems impossible.

How about this for a story line? Heat start off slow, then the rumors that Van Gunday can't handle all the personalities starts to come out. Then Riley returns with his 1 lb. of grecian and the Heat start to turn it around. I can see it now...
