Babcock to Get the Ax

The Toronto Raptors have reportedly scheduled a 2PM Press Conference to announce the firing of General Manager Rob Babcock. Amazingly enough, I felt the GM did his very best work during this past year's Draft in selecting both Charlie Villanueva and Joey Graham (not to mention Jose Calderon). I'm assuming the team just wants to take those surprisingly efficient moves and run for the hills. With the trade deadline just about a month away, that might not be a bad idea. Nevertheless, today is a sad day at the Source as Babcock became the butt of countless jokes in our columns. We'll miss you Babs...

Babs also shook Carroll Dawson on that James for Alston deal. It might be a bit early to suggest that his draft went well-- Graham and Villanueva are getting minutes simply because the team sucks. I think they'll both be players, but I don't think they've been exactly stellar thus far.

You have to wonder if Sam Mitchell's job is now in jeopardy. I'm watching the press conference right now, and Wayne Embry is saying he likes Sam and they get along very well, but I bet Sam's leash just got significantly shorter. If Embry has a guy in mind that might be sought after this summer, he might bring him in sooner to not risk losing out on him. He played with Don Nelson and hired him as Bucks coach years ago, so maybe he'll try and convince him to come to Toronto. Doubt Nelson goes there, although Lenny Wilkens once did.

Babcock didn't draft Calderon - he signed his as a FA. He did draft Roko Ukic, who chose to stay in Europe. I think the jury is still out (um, my jury is, at least) on Joey Graham. We'll see about him...

Worst GM ever? He sure was until he had a terrific draft this year.

Chris,
I never implied that he drafted Calderon. If that was the case, he wouldn't be in parentheses. He's a rookie, that's why I mentioned him in that grouping. Nice post though. Take it easy...
