2006 All-Star Reserves

Count 'Melo among those who were snubbed

Announced later today, but read here first...

West Reserves

F- Kevin Garnett
F- Dirk Nowitzki
C- Pau Gasol
G- Tony Parker
G- Ray Allen
WC- Shawn Marion
WC- Elton Brand

**UPDATE** It seems that Gasol has made the team afterall. Perhaps there was a change of heart among the coaches whether or not Pau should be considered a center. Or, maybe someone important read my displeasure with the Okur selection and promptly changed it. I'll go with the latter until I hear otherwise.

Snubs: Carmelo Anthony, Pau Gasol, Andrei Kirilenko, Chris Paul, Baron Davis

East Reserves (As announced this morning by Peter Vecsey)

F-Vince Carter
F-Rasheed Wallace - will most likely replace Jermaine as a starter
C-Ben Wallace
G-Chauncey Billups
G-Richard Hamilton
WC-Paul Pierce
WC-Chris Bosh

Snubs: Gilbert Arenas (may be selected to fill Jermaine's spot), Michael Redd, Jason Kidd

I agree with the list accept that Ray Allen should be replaced with Chris Paul, but we all know how all-star games like to snub rookies.

I don't agree with Okur over Gasol either...Plus I think they should have found some way to get 'Melo on this team.

I think the coaches got it right, all these players deserve to be there. However Okur is only there because he is a centre and the only other choice is the always injured Camby.

You could make a case for Paul over Allen because of the better record of the Hornets.

I wish the bench could be chosen regardless of position so Gasol and Melo could have been there. But then the West would have a shit load of fowards and the East would have plenty of gaurds.

1 of us? Does this mean you're against Okur making the team? Like the guy said before the only other alternative is Camby and he's injured, or has been injured for a good portion of the season.

I just read that the Post is reporting that Rip, Billups, both Wallaces, Bosh, VC, and Pierce are the East reserves.

Completely awful for Arenas to be left off this squad.

i would rather see brad miller at C over okur... but then again i jsut cant imagine memo an all-star. i have a blog post on the subject of all-stars going up in a quick minute as well

Okur absolutley deserves to be there! He is 2nd in the West among Centers in points, rebounds and assists. He can shoot better than any other big man except Dirk and his blocks are increasing as well. He hasn't missed a game and the Jazz are a .500 team.

Tony Parker...

I dont understand why everyone thinks this guy is so great. Hes a good player in a great situation, that is all.

Fair enough...but I feel Gasol is the worthier selection. The problem is that the coaches don't recognize him as a center. I find that mind-boggling since he's obviously played the 5 for the majority of the year. Just because Lorenzen Wright starts there, doesn't mean Pau isn't playing the middle when Lo is on the pine. It's time to stop getting so technical and start voting in the appropriate players.

I find it awful that Melo will not be there!

Impressive trick whoever runs this site. Everyone is talking about it.

Arenas should have Rip's spot and Redd should have the final spot.

There's absolutely no reason whatsoever that Rip should have made that team. If we're rewarding guards for being on a successful team, where's Jason Terry?

Carmelo is becoming the most overrated player ever. All he does is shoot the ball a lot.

He's not a rebounder.
He's not a passer.
He's not good at 3s.
He's not special on defense.

The West is loaded with multitalented forwards.

Melo's teammate Andre Miller barely gets any mention. He is top 15 ALL TIME for assists per game. Plus he gets lots of rebounds for a point guard.

Complete BS that my favorite player, Carmelo, is not on that squad. I see this is another All-Star Game I will not be watching.

All-Star Weekend has been a joke for years and this year is not any different. Yao Ming as a starter is proof positive that it is time to scrap the whole event!

Carmelo is garbage. He's not half as good as anyone on that roster.

Is it just because he is young and has a cute smile that he is popular?

Lamar Odom, Rashard Lewis, Andrei Kirilenko and maybe even Boris Diaw & Shane Battier are Western forwards not on the all star team - all better then Carzillo!

Carzillo represents everything wrong with the NBA - young guy running around jacking up the ball, marketed and hyped as something special to sell sneakers and junk.

Where's Dwight Howard in all this? Im not sure if he deserves to actually get on, but shouldn't he at least be getting some recognition? He technically is averaging more points (15.2) than All-Star Rasheed Wallace (15.1), more rebounds than Ben and Rasheed, Dwight leads the league at 12.6 per game, and is in the top 20 in blocks. I know you guys will just tell me that he's on a sub .500 team while Sheed is playing on the best team in the NBA right now, but still, shouldn't he at least get some recognition and a "snub"?

Carmelo is not only blessed with looks, but amazing talent as well. Melo, along with Gilbert Arenas, should have been named All-Stars.

At 9:13 PM, Blogger Will Shu said...

Carmelo is a good player, agreed
but look at the western forwards...
if melo was to go to houston who would be taken out?
kevin garnett? A former MVP? if you take him out, you should at least replace him with another mvp
Dirk? 3rd last yeat in the MVP running?who has the mavs on a 12 game winning streak? who has kept the mavs in the playoffs after losing steve nash and michael finley for abosolutely nothing?
Shawn marion? 3rd in the league in rebounding who does everything better than 'melo
or elton brand- who is carrying the team to playoff berth and peaking in his career.
the point is if melo was in the east he wouldve made the all star... maybe. but he hasnt stepped up far enough to be considered better than the west forwards.

This is high on the BS level this year. My 2 favorite guys, Carmelo Anthony and Gilbert Arenas, are not there. All the Western forwards play the 4 spot and naturally they get more rebounds than the 3 spot. I think I will watch the Winter Olympics luge competition this year!

The Miami Heat just got spanked on national television. What on earth happened to this so-called elite team.

sorry but Okur deserves it more than gasol. if Okur played with the supporting cast that gasol has at memphis (shooters like miller, stoudamire, jackson, battier) he would not get all the double teams and the special attention that he gets. he has carried this team from day one, while boozer has sat out, kirilenko has battled injuries at times, and the guards have looked like they belong on a high school team. he would get more assists then gasol as well if he played with the some guys that could make an open jumper. Gasol is a better shot blocker that is all. In all other areas taking evrything into consideration Okur is even or better.

i think the nba got the rosters right. there's no way arenas deserves to make it over the guys ahead of him (and it's a foregone conclusion that he'll be named as o'neal's replacement). i'm glad bosh and pierce made it, and i think all 4 of those pistons deserve it too. the only one in the east with a fair gripe is jkidd in my book, and ultimately i think carter should get the nod for the last spot over him.

in the west, i was a little surprised that ray allen made it. i would have given that spot to chris paul or maybe even baron davis, but ray's certainly not a bad choice. the last couple weeks i'd been trying to think up ways where melo and okur could get on the team, since they're both having breakout years, but there's just no room for them, mainly because the idiot fans in china voted for mcgrady and yao. the nba should take away fan voting. half the votes are cast before fans get a real sense of who's having an all-star year. yao and mcgrady are huge worldwide stars, but let them make the team next year, when they're healthy and deserving. honestly, i think the league would make a better business decision by introducing to a worldwide audience more NEW stars, like okur and jrich, for instance. maybe then they can get a bigger audience when espn and tnt show their occasional jazz and warrior games. i love shaq and kobe, but i feel bad for would-be fans who never get a chance to see the full range of the league, which is pretty exciting when you look past the painful-to-watch atlantic division and minnesota. there's new stars (gasol, brand, kirilenko, jrich, bosh, howard, the list goes on and on) on new, up-and-coming teams, but it's as though the league wants to hide them all from us.

sjg.
